Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry They are enjoying their first experience as a team. The friends and former Ryder Cup teammates are tied for first place after the opening round of Zurich Classic New Orleans this Thursday in Avondale, Louisiana.
After heading to Bourbon Street for a pre-tournament steak dinner, McIlroy and Lowry shot an 11-under 61 in Thursday’s fourball round, racking up 11 bogey-free birdies. It was a great performance from the Ulster player and the Northern Irishman, who have five major titles between them, on their debut in Zurich.
McIlroy and Lowry made four consecutive birdies en route to a 30, 6 under par, on the first nine holes to post a 31, 5 under par on the second nine. They are tied to teams of Ryan Brehm and Mark Hubbard, Ben Kohles and Patton Kizzire. and David Lipsky and Englishman Aaron Rai.
One shot behind the quartet of teams are Davis Thompson and Andrew Novak, South Africa’s Cameron Champ and MJ Daffue, and Belgium’s Thomas Detry and Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre.
Teams will play foursomes, considered the more difficult of the two formats, on Friday before the 36-hole cut. The field will resume playing fourballs on Saturday and foursomes on Sunday.
Eric Cole and Russ Cochran tied for 74th after a 3-under 69, but Cole managed to score a hole-in-one on the 207-yard, par-3 14th hole.
