Alex Palou finished fifth in the Indycar test held this past weekend at Barber, but things could have ended better for the Catalan driver, if not for an untimely accident that ruined his racing strategy.
Palou started the race in tenth position, but apparently there are chances to win after making his first pit stop under the yellow flag.
However, it was found later forced to carry out the second of his two planned arrests under another Pace Car era, after the AJ Foyt Racing car from Sting Robb lost direction and crash on turn 1.
The accident happened a few laps ahead of the current champion is preferredwhich forced the Spanish to maximize fuel economy at the checkered flagthus losing their chances of winning.
““Today was a roller coaster,” Palou told NBC. “For a while we thought we were going to win by a few seconds [de diferencia], and then we messed up. It is what it is. It’s IndyCar, some days it falls on your side, some days it doesn’t.”
His second stop meant that the cars heading for a three-stop approach, notably Scot McLaughlin and Will Power, from Team Penske, were about to catch up to him, finally. returned to the track ahead of the Barcelona native after making his final pass through the pit lane. He was also passed by his teammate, Linus Lundqvist, and Meyer Shank Racing’s Felix Rosenqvist, leaving him fifth in the race.
“It was frustrating, because I wanted to defend myself and I couldn’t, because we had to save a lot of fuel which we couldn’t do”Alex added. “Coming from tenth to fifth was a good day. Now I’m looking forward to the month of May.” [el de Indianápolis]”.
Palou’s consistency in the first three races, however, allowed him to be third overall, behind only Colton Herta, three away, and Power. At the other end of the strategy scale, teammate Lundqvist made the most of the yellow flags to move from 19th to third place.
