Sunday’s post-race at Jerez was very thorough as several actions were subsequently scrutinized by the Stewards Panel, who called out the drivers involved. But the most tense meeting was the one that studied the maneuver of Aleix Espargaró that ended his career and that of Johann Zarco. They finally decided it was just a race incident and that inflamed the Frenchman to confront team leader Freddie Spencer to the point where they had to fire him from Race Direction.
This is what he told reporters on Sunday: “I went to Race Direction and Freddie Spencer was watching the action with us. And he was looking at me like he wanted to know what I wanted. He wanted me to complain about Aleix . I told him, ‘I’m not going to complain,’ but I told him he’s not good enough for this job because he doesn’t make the right decisions at the right time.'”
“He looked at us as if we were two children giving him a moral lesson. But, no Freddie, maybe you’re too passionate, but you’re not making the right decision. You’re not in the right place. Freddie Spencer is not the right person for this position,” he concluded.
Before, in the backdrop with televisions, he did not bite his tongue on the microphones of ‘Canal+ France’: “He has no ability. Someone else should be put in his place, because he does not make the right decisions in the right. Maybe he’s too emotional, and therefore he’s too influenced by which driver you want to punish or not.'”
And this Monday came the official reaction of the Grand Prix Commission to cut off this type of actions by drivers before the Panel of Stewards.
“In all categories, various decisions have been made to ensure better respect for the hierarchy of disciplinary bodies and to redefine the authority and competence of the FIM Appeal Commissioners.” They did not clarify if the events were behind closed doors or if they could also be punished for media violations.
