He May 1st This is always an important date for motorsport enthusiasts. Even for those less devoted to motorsports, May 1, 1994 will never be forgotten. And the accident that ended his life Ayrton Senna still remembers being sick afterwards 30 years. The Brazilian for many is the best of all time. For others, there are probably better ones. There are many opinions but what cannot be denied is that ‘Magic’ is an icon who changed the history of this sport.
His genius behind the wheel, his legendary fast lap ins Monacoor, his unusual overtaking, his fratricidal duel with Alain Prost that went down in the annals of history, his strong belief in God… there were many ingredients that made Senna a unique driver.
Ayrton did three titles (1988, 1990 and 1991) in the golden age of McLaren-Honda but with the arrival of the incredible Williams in 1992, the pairing’s hegemony collapsed. This led to the Brazilian signing for Grove’s team in 1994 when Prost retired. However, the performance of the car was not the same and it arrived at Imola, the third race of the season, needing two consecutive zeros for reliability.
But the worst happened on the curve Tamburello at more than 300km/h. Senna went straight at full speed and hit the wall. In images immediately afterward, the body was seen motionless inside the cockpit. When the doctors got him out of the car, they tried to revive him but all efforts were in vain. One of the largest was lost.
The reasons remain unclear
“No one will know what exactly happened. “There is no doubt that the steering column failed, but the evidence indicates that the car did not leave the track as a result of a steering breakage,” Newey told ‘The Guardian ‘ years ago.
The accident was sent to trial by the Italian Prosecutor’s Office Frank Williams, Patrick Head, the former technical director, and Adrien Newey himself. They were accused of doing a botch job to change something that Senna himself had requested instead of changing the part for a new one and this would have caused the steering failure.
The three were initially acquitted after it was determined that there was no evidence to prove their guilt. However, in 2007 Patrick Head was blamed for not implementing protocol controls for the new arrangement. However, he was not arrested because the statute of limitations had expired.
black weekend
That Imola Grand Prix was one of the hardest in memory. On the Saturday before the accident with Senna, another happened to Ratzernberger, who lost his life during training left the entire paddock in shock. Furthermore, as if that was not enough, Rubens Barrichello also had a very serious accident that endangered his physical integrity, although he was left in shock.
Right next door Barrichello Senna stopped to help him. A gesture that reflects Ayrton’s character who is always willing to go out of his way to help any teammate in trouble.
