Granollers, new world No. 1: “Betting on doubles is a good decision”

Although the Spaniard climbed to the top of the world rankings for the first time, his harvest of success is large and many. Twenty-five titles highlight Marcel Granollers’ record, with seven in the Masters 1000 category and one ATP Finals standing out. He was unable to close out the Grand slam win. He played five. Three with Zeballos, two from Wimbledon and one from the US Open. And two more, previously, with Marc López. Success eluded him.

In Madrid they aim for their first trophy of 2024. They were defeated in Auckland, Buenos Aires and in the Indian Wells Masters 1000. In a dramatic match, especially in the super tie break, and after saving four match points, they beat the Monegasque Hugo Nys and the Polish Jan Zielinski

“It’s crazy. It didn’t start well but we turned it around and in the super tiebreaker it was like we were on track, then it got complicated and we almost lost,” he explained after the game.

“I still can’t believe it. I’m very happy, I got through a very difficult and complicated moment. We’ll be number one on Monday but the road is long and very difficult. We’ve been through good times and not so good times but we’re hanging on,” added of Spanish doubles players.

“It’s also very special that I was able to do it in my country, in Madrid, with my people,” said Granollers, who, at the age of 38, recalled everything he had to go through in his career and the fact that he had to put aside the his individual course to focus on doubles. “When things were not going well, I chose doubles and now it’s clear that the decision was good,” he noted.
