The sport of golf is now part of the Iberdrola Support Program for Women Athletes, an initiative that promotes equality through sport and directly benefits more than 600,000 athletes in 35 different specialties.
The President of Iberdrola, Ignacio Sánchez Galán, presided over an event, held at the National Golf Center in Madrid, where the adhesion of the National Golf, Paddle and Cycling Federations to the aforementioned Program was confirmed, developed since 2016, which makes the electricity company the main promoter of women’s sports in Spain, an initiative that has resulted in a 42% increase in the number of women’s licenses from the supported Federations.
Iberdrola’s support now reaches almost 700,000 federated women – golf alone contributes more than 80,000 of them – which means it supports 2 out of every 3 federated women, that is without taking into account the indirect support, which is huge, reaching many more women and girls practicing grassroots sports.
Gonzaga Escuariaza, President of the Royal Spanish Golf Federation, also hosted an event that brought together representatives of the 35 National Federations that host the Iberdrola Program.
“Iberdrola has become the first company that is truly dedicated to women’s sports, something that is welcome, a commitment that is also stable and lasting over time. Having a partner like Iberdrola is wonderful, because it will allow us to support women more and encourage their transition from amateurism to professionalism,” said the RFEG president.
Escauriaza also emphasized that “golf is lucky to have a very brave woman in the head of the RFEG at the time, Emma Villacieros, who created the Women’s Committee many years ago. We’re looking forward to what’s to come, because for many years we’ve had the same budget for men’s golf as for women’s golf. This policy is paying off, none more so than last year, when Spain won every possible title at the Women’s European Championships.”
Mar Ruiz de la Torre, President of the RFEG Women’s Amateur Technical Committee, the professional Ana Peláez and the amateur Andrea Revuelta managed to convey to those present some of the details of golf, with an exhibition shot that was successful which was carried out by Andrea Revuelta and later imitated by representatives of other sports specialties.
Iberdrola’s ambassadors of the sport of golf have become the two reference players for all girls starting at any club, the professional Ana Peláez and the amateur Andrea Revuelta.
The first of them, winner of the Ladies European Tour, said she felt “extremely grateful” for the help of Iberdrola, “which shows its commitment to women’s sport since 2016. Thanks to this help, we will be able to even more people see how It is golf, one of the sports with the most female licenses. Agreements like this bring us closer to having the same opportunities as children. That Iberdrola supports us in this brings us even closer,” estimated the golfer from Malaga.
For his part, Andrea Revuelta, who in September will begin his adventure in America after an amazing amateur career that included his recent victory in the 2024 SM La Reina Cup, is “delighted to be surrounded so much by the who is an athlete. Seeing girls become Olympians and build such important careers gives me a lot of respect, but it also makes me excited for the future, because I see that Iberdrola has helped them find their path and focus their career . I hope something happens to me too,” explained the girl from Madrid.
