The Austrian tennis player Dominic Thiemwinner of the US Open in 2020, decided retire at the end this year amid recurring physical problems and poor results, the newspaper notes “Salzburger Nachrichten”.
That newspaper, whose information was echoed by other newspapers in the country, indicated that Thiem, 30, had already informed his partners and sponsors of his decision to leave professional sports this fall.
Thiem himself, currently ranked 117th in the ATP, will publicly address his future this weekend, his representative informed the press.
The tennis player’s January goal of returning to the top 50 in the world rankings now seems like a very distant goal.
The former world number three does not even remain in the top one hundred, and among his achievements in the last twelve months is only reaching the final of the Kitzbühel tournament in July.
At 30 years old, Thiem recognized problems with his performance caused by his ailments, especially with his right wrist, which prevented him from competing at the highest level.
“If I end the year again around 100th in the rankings, I really have to consider whether it’s worth continuing”Thiem declared in a press conference in January.
At the end of March, Thiem announced that his right wrist, which he had injured in 2021 in Mallorca and had not yet recovered, was causing him pain again.
“The strange sensation in the wrist has returned, accompanied by slight pain,” he said, according to public radio ORF.
In addition, he noted that his performance in tournaments, even at the Challenger level, was not good enough and he struggled to add victories on a sustained basis.
