Australia’s goalkeeper Lydia Williams has announced that he will retire from international football after Olympic Games in Paris, close the curtain on a career in women’s football that spanned nearly 20 years. The Australian native, 35, will hang up his boots after more than 100 international matches and five World Cups played with the ‘Matildas’.
“This team is truly special and I’m proud of what it represents, what it represents for an entire generation of women and girls,” she said in a statement just hours ago. “It’s just getting started and I can’t wait to cheer the team on from the sidelines as I begin the next chapter of my life.”
Although Mackenzie Arnold has been Australia’s first-choice goalkeeper, Williams hopes to play a key role in the team’s bid for its first Olympic football medal between July 26 and August 26. “It’s an absolute honour. and privilege to represent my country, my sport, my family and many teammates for the past 19 years.”
Australia, a semi-finalist at last year’s Women’s World Cup, were drawn with Germany, Zambia and the United States in the group stage.
