The Giro d’Italia removes the Stelvio climb from the final part of the race

Date:

The organization of Italy is spinning announced this Tuesday the Stelvioone of the mythical ports to climb to sixteenth episode of May 16, connecting Livigno and Santa Cristina Val Gardena, will ultimately not be part of the race route. This is called the queen test phase.

The reason is the avalanche danger which affects the mythical summit these days. “The snowfall in recent days has increased this risk,” the organization said in a statement. It is expected to be one of the ports that can decide the general classification in the last few days.

For this reason, the Giro d’Italia had to find an alternative. The race will instead go through Giogo di Santa Maria, a pass at 2,489 meters of altitude that will replace the Stelvio to maintain the mountain’s sun hardness. Its inclusion in the route would make this sixteenth stage have a final length of 206 kilometersinstead of the 202 originally planned.
