He Moto3 World Championship He had two correct names at the start of the campaign: Dani Holgado and David Alonso. The Alicante native Red Bull GASGAS Tech3 He arrived at the head of the general standings with 93 points, just one more than the Colombian. Holgado, like last year, is having a fantastic start with four podiums and one victory (in Portimao) in five races.
At just 19 years old, he clearly has a clear path to climb to Moto2 with a title under his arm. He says this in detail in a brief conversation with MD before the action begins in Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
As we mentioned outside the bus, last year he crashed in Barcelona when he was in the leading group. Sensations this time?
I came into this weekend with great enthusiasm. We are playing at home so I have extra motivation. I can’t wait to work with the team to fight for the top positions on Sunday.
In 2023 he had a good start but the season went from more to less, in 2024 he had a good start again but what changed in his preparation so that it doesn’t happen again?
Well last year was a good year for us because we learned a lot. Some things happened as a rookie but it was still a year where I matured a lot and where I learned to manage leadership and I think that learning at the beginning of the season will be good for mine
They are two drivers who started with a very high bar, David Alonso and you. Do you think this will be the rivalry that continues for the rest of the year or will more drivers get involved?
Personally, I think my strongest rival is him, but we are in a world championship where all the drivers are fast and another surprise can happen at any time.
What are the strengths of David Alonso and you on this front?
Actually, we both look alike. We both brake a little hard, I think more than the rest. But maybe as an advantage I will tell you that I have a little more experience of one year in the category. I can handle some moments better and that’s where I should get my benefit.
Are you more comfortable with this new Moto3? The evolution of KTM, the arrival of Pirelli…
The bike has really changed a lot because it stopped evolving for four years due to Covid. A completely different motorcycle was created: engine, swingarm, chassis and to it were added new wheels. And this causes the times to drop dramatically. It is under review. We set records at every circuit we go to. The bike itself has been improved and with the extra Pirelli it gives further improvement.
In previous interviews he has commented that he wants to be a double Moto3 champion. Is that still the idea?
No (laughter). I would have liked to be a double champion but things happened last year and in the end I couldn’t win the title. Now it’s time to focus on this year and probably in 2025 we will make the leap into the category. It’s something that we left half-talked about last season because it’s something that’s been on my mind as well and it’s a goal that I want to achieve. So let’s focus on following the title and next year we will see.
Is it a priority to climb with the same structure (KTM)?
We’re trying it out, to see which team I’m going to make here. I can’t say anything because we don’t know anything yet.
