US authorities dropped all charges against the golfer Scottie Schefflerwho was arrested on May 17 of Louisville Police (Kentucky, USA) after being charged with second-degree assault on an officer.
Jefferson County prosecutor Mike O’Connell asked the judge in the case Wednesday that, due to a lack of evidence, dismiss the charges against the world number one without the possibility of future charges. .
The incident occurred when Scheffler was on his way to Valhalla Golf Club to play the second round of PGA Championship and tried to avoid the police checkpoint to access the golf course.
After his arrest, Scheffler, 27, declared that it was all a “huge misunderstanding,” something O’Connell confirmed Wednesday by noting that the golfer’s claim was corroborated by evidence.
“Scheffler’s actions and the evidence surrounding their exchanges during this dispute do not meet the elements of any criminal offense,” O’Connell said, according to sports television network ESPN.
The police detective who arrested Scheffler, Bryan Gillis, accused the athlete of not stopping his car and dragging him several meters, causing injuries to his left wrist and knee.
Scheffler spent two hours in jail and was able to participate in the second round of the PGA Championship.
Last week, Louisville Police Chief Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel announced that Gillis had been disciplined for not activating his personal video camera, as required by regulations, so the incident could not be recorded.
