The German Alexander Zverev left Rafael Nadal in the first round of Roland Garros. A historic event, stemming from a volatile draw that pitted the fourteen-time tournament champion against one of tennis’ greatest players, won the ATP Masters 1000 in Rome a few weeks earlier.
It was too early for Nadal, who would have beaten 90% of the tennis players in the team for the level he gave, but that day he was in the 10%. Sasha Zverev 27 years old and No. 4 in the world, Roland Garros semi-finalist in three previous editions.
However, Zverev was about to make a colossal mistake. He fought to an elimination in the third round against the Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor27 years old and number 25. A tough player under the roof of the center pushed the German to the limit.
Zverev survived afterwards 4h.15′ of suspense, raised 1-4 in the fifth set, double break match. His experience and nerves helped grip Griekspoor, who were more relaxed with nothing to lose than when faced with the option of delivering one of the tournament’s great surprises.
Zverev responded with fits and starts, deciding in a super tiebreak. Success for 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, 4-6 and 7-6 (10-3). In the second round difficulty, against the Dane Holger Rune or the Slovakian Jozef Kovalik.
