The London Metropolitan Police (metfor its acronym in English) reported this Sunday that 53 people were arrested on Saturday in connection with the Champions League finals, played at the London stadium of WembleyHey.
Most of the arrests were for trying to enter the stadium without a ticket, police said. metand specified that five of the arrests were for invading the playing field.
More than 2,000 officers were deployed on Saturday in the British capital as part of a city-wide security measure for the final to be played in real Madridchampions of the Champions League, and the German team Borussia Dortmund at Wembley.
A Met spokesman said law enforcement were confident “the vast majority” of attempts to enter the stadium were unsuccessful.
“Videos shared online showing groups running towards entrances do not necessarily represent successful attempts to enter the stadium,” the spokesperson said.
“Major sporting events often attract attempts by those without tickets to get around fences or gain entry. There has been a robust police operation to support the security plan of Wembley and the officials worked closely with the administrators and staff of the stadium to maintain safety at all times,” he added.
He real Madrid won the Champions League trophy for the 15th time after beating Dortmund 2-0.
