Utebo, a municipality of Zaragoza with approximately 19,000 inhabitants, currently displays a Wembley Champions League trophy. This is not what Real Madrid won on Saturday against Borussia Dortmund (2-0) in the mythical English stadium, where everything will be as it seems, but a reproduction of FC Barcelona’s winner in 2011 against Manchester United ( 3 – 1) with goals from Peter, Messi and country. The newspaper ‘Heraldo de Aragón’ explains how the trophy arrived at the Mesonada Museum, headquarters of the exhibition ‘100 years of Utebo FC Pride and passion of a people’.
It was an exact reproduction of what he raised Eric Abidal in respect of Carles Puyol for his story of recovery after playing after recovering from a serious illness. The difference is that it does not have the inscription of the winning team. One, logically, is in the Barça Museum. In fact, as detailed on UEFA’s website, the original trophy of each edition has been kept by the European football body since 2008 and what the champion club is taking away is a reproduction.
UEFA has two trophies prepared in case there is an error in registering the name of the champion and it has to use the exact copy. That was not the case, everything worked the first time, and the piece ended up at auction, “passing into the hands of a private collector emotionally connected to Utebo who prefers to remain anonymous,” according to the Aragonese newspaper.
