Southgate, on dumping Grealish and Maddison: “Other players have had better times”

Date:

England is one of the favorite teams to win Euro 2024 in Germany. The current European runners-up will be looking this year to get rid of the thorn left by the defeat at Wembley against Italy in the last edition of the continental tournament.

This Thursday, Gareth Southgate, England coach, announced the final list of players who will go to Germany for the European title. Those out are Harry Maguire (Manchester United), due to injury, Jarrad Branthwaite (Everton), James Trafford (Burnley), Curtis Jones (Liverpool), Jarell Qansah (Liverpool) and the most surprising of all, Jack Grealish (Manchester City) and James Maddison (Tottenham).

At the press conference after the official call was published, they asked Southgate about discarding the last two players.

“It’s one of the hardest parts of the job.”, the coach said about choosing who to do without. “All the players made the decision with great respect, although, of course, Everyone believes they should be on the list, so they are top players, because they believe in themselves and have that mentality.“He began to explain. “But the truth is that we have some players who have been playing very well throughout the season and We consider that there are other players who have had a better season than them, especially in the last six months,” he said.

We put a lot of thought into this to try to be fair. We have made this decision but we can take a different path. They are both great players, teammates and great people to work with, so I’m sorry to give you that bad news.
