The American Bryson DeChambeau won the US Open this Sunday at Pinehurst (North Carolina) after another brutal final round for Rory McIlroy.
After 72 holes and 4 days of competition on the tough Pinehurst course, with its many domed greens, it all came down to N.18, where Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy, who had not played a Major in 10 years, suffered another setback.
Great for 14 holes, McIlroy led before making three bogeys on the final four holes of the day, including one on the 18th, missing a putt from over three feet that looked easy (after missing one from 30 inches). N.16) and would have sent the four-time major winner (PGA in 2012 and 2014, US Open in 2011, British Open in 2014) to a tiebreaker against DeChambeau.
The Northern Irishman, second last year, now has 21 top 10s in a major since his last victory.
Placed in the next round, DeChambeau emerged from two difficult situations on this final hole to eventually secure par and the one-stroke victory over McIlroy.
DeChambeau (30 years old), who already won the tournament in 2020, now won his second major title. A member of the Saudi Arabia-funded LIV Tour, he has shone this season in the big tournaments, the only one that welcomes dissidents, with a 6th place finish at the Masters in April and a 2nd place finish at the PGA Championship behind Xander Schauffele in May.
Americans Tony Finau and Patrick Cantlay shared 3rd placetwo strokes behind his countryman.
American Scottie Scheffler, world number 1, who eliminated him in the first rounds, could only finish 41st in the tournament, 14 strokes behind the winner.
