Sinner approaches Wimbledon by reaching his first grass final

Date:

Wimbledon It’s just around the corner (July 1-14) and the new world number 1’s approach to the tournament with the most pedigree in the tennis world is very positive for him: Jannik Sinner is classified into Halle ATP (Germany) for their first final on grass, overcoming very difficult matches and rivals throughout the week, the kind of preparation that gives a lot of morale and confidence to tennis players.

After losing all three sets in their first three match matches Tallon Griekspoor, Fabian Marozsan and Jan-Lennard Struffthree men with more risk than their classification suggests, the Italian needed only two sets -6-4, 7-6 (3)- in the semifinals against the Chinese Zhizhen Zhang (42nd), yes, after raising a ‘set-ball’ match before forcing a tiebreak.

Sinner, 22 years old, will play this Sunday in the final (not before 2:00 pm) against Hubert Hurkaczchampion in Halle’2022 and German executioner and local idol Alexander Zverev, 7-6 (2) and 6-4. The Italian and the Pole have so far shared victories in their last four on the ATP circuit (2-2). Surprisingly, they were both paired this week at the doubles table and lost in the quarterfinals against the French Sadio Doumbia and Fabien Reboul.

“It means a lot to me, I had four very difficult games to get to the final. Today was a good game, with more exchanges and that’s exactly what I needed. I’m happy and we’ll see what comes tomorrow, ” said Sinner, who is aiming for his fourth title in 2024 after reigning in Australian Open, Rotterdam and the Miami Masters 1,000.

Jannik is having a sensational season, already has 37 wins in 40 games, he has lost only three games, all three times in the semifinals, two against Espanyol Carlos Alcaraz (Indian Wells, Roland Garros) and another against the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas (Monte Carlo).

Sinner has so far won 13 of the 17 finals played and, if he beats Hurkacz on Sunday, he will become the eighth tennis player capable of lifting the champion trophy in his first tournament as world No. Its last achievement was the Scotsman Andy Murray when he won the 2016 Masters.
