Frenchman Willy Sagnol, coach of Georgiadeclared this Wednesday, after the victory against the Portugal which proved a historic passage to the round of 16 of euro 2024, where they will face Spain, their undefeated ‘Cinderella’ team of the tournament.
“When you are the small team in the competition, you have nothing to lose. No matter what happens, we don’t want to have regrets about not enjoying ourselves or not being ourselves. We have no weight on our back. It’s more difficult when France, Spain, Portugal… because they expect you to win. The only responsibility we have is to make Georgians proud and I think we achieved that,” he said after the game at a press conference.
“When I came to Georgia, it was different football. But the Georgian football federation did a great job in developing football and now we got the results. I’m not talking about motivation or discipline, about players who not only want to win, but do it in a good way. “I’m very happy,” he added.
Happy with the historic classification, he made sure he realized the true scale of the achievement after the tournament. “We are focused on the competition so it is difficult to realize what we have achieved, and we will surely do that when we return home. Now I’m speechless, I’m proud of the players,” he pointed out.
Motivation before the game?: “I can’t remember what I told the players before the start, but something like ‘play your football and be disciplined.’ I told others to remember when they were 16 so they could play like that. “They were great and exceeded expectations.”
