The Eurocup shows that technology and football can go hand in hand

Date:

Some think that the development of technology is completely unstoppable and its daily use is the order of the day. Also at the level of sports, and football is a real example of this in recent years, where the implementation of VAR, among other things, had and has its defenders and detractors.

AI introduced in football is something that cannot be stopped. And the UEFAknowing this, made a significant investment to manifest it European Cup which could work successfully despite the fact that, during the season, in many leagues there were conflicting situations in this regard.

It is now a pioneer in 2019, applying for the first time to use the VAR, but five years later he sought to give a twist to everything related to decisions made in the VOR room so that referees have more tools to correct it and reduce errors to a minimum. Moreover, so far in the Euro Cup there has not been a single controversial situation in this regard, so it can be considered a success. And, in addition, they are supported by a football technology center (FTECH hub) located in the international transmission center of Leipzig.

Two big news

The first invention is applied here European Cup It has to do with something that can clearly change the perception of refereeing achievements: the ball. Adidas created the Fussballiebe (love of football), official championship ball, with its own technology called Connected Ballnever applied before at a Euro, and provides “an unprecedented view of every element of the ball’s movement”, as explained by the organization itself, and facilitates referees’ decision-making, especially in matters of offside.

This Fussballsiebe has an inner layer a CTR-CORE, a chip designed for precision and consistency. Or what is the same, explained more simply is that you can check exactly the moment of impact of the ball of the players, so the ‘frame’ in an offside is taken exactly, so that there are no kind of doubts about it and be as real as possible. This data is transmitted in real time and combined with other player position data created by AI, which is part of other great new things, the semi-automatic offside technology (SAOT) from UEFA, speeding up refereeing decisions and avoiding long delays, as seen with Ndoye’s goal in Switzerland-Germany.

This SAOT system is an innovation that aims to achieve accuracy and speed, so that the game does not stop for too long. It represents situations quickly and effectively thanks to 10 special cameras installed in each stadium and studying “29 body points of each player”. A system used in the Champions League since 2022, but now with Adidas ball technology has taken a very important step forward by having the moment of impact in real time.

In addition to this, and as has been the case since 2016, UEFA has goal technology in all its stadiums, something that is not applied to LaLiga EA Sports and has been heavily criticized this season. A system with 7 cameras per goal and uses ball tracking software called GLT and detects in a second whether it has become a goal or not, notifying the referee through a watch that emits vibrations.

All this data is received and compiled in the FTECH hub, the epicenter for all the technologies applied in this Euro Cup. In fact, there is the VOR room, with many more tools to apply decision-making and increase accuracy, showing that the path of technology and football are now inseparable.
