The new record achieved by Fernando Alonso

Date:

The Spanish Fernando Alonso (Alpine), double Formula One world champion, will recover this Sunday, when he starts at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix -the eighth in the World Championship-, the historic record for longest career in the queen category of motorsport of seven -time German intercontinental laureate Michael Schumacher.

Schumacher -like Alonso with a comeback after his first retirement from F1-, whose historic record of seven titles is the equivalent of Englishman Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) two years ago, made his premier class debut last 1991 Belgian Grand Prix and disputed his last race in Brazil in 2012: a season of 21 years and three monthsexactly.

The Asturian double world champion, who has confirmed he wants to continue “another two or three years” in the motorsport honor division, made his debut in 2001 Australian Grand Prix and reached this Sunday 21 years, three months and eight days since its debut, at the Albert Park circuit in Melbourne.

Alonso, 40 years old-thirteen younger than ‘Kaiser’, still recovering from a serious ski accident he suffered at the end of 2013 in Meribel, in the French Alps- will start on the tenth this Sunday on Baku street circuit; where Monegasque Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) will start from pole position, whose partner, Spaniard Carlos Sainz, will make it from fourth place: behind two Red Bull Mexican Sergio Pérez -second on the grid- and Dutchman Max Verstappen, World Cup leader.
