David Aznar completed his interview with MD by talking about his life in Bilbao and his references as a player in his time and as a coach today. By the way, he played as a center midfielder during his time as a footballer.
How is your life in Bilbao?
You live here and eat very well. I love the mountains, I like to go out to do my outdoor routes. The presence of the sea, mountains, this temperature. Bilbao is an amazing city.
Do people recognize you on the street?
I would like to continue as a normal, anonymous boy, but it is true that when I go through Sopelana (the town where he lives) sometimes they ask me for photos, autographs… It’s nice to have people’s recognition and affection , it’s what I like the most here in Lezama. They made me feel like someone else.
Who or who are your references as a coach?
I love Guardiola’s combinative, associative and dominating game off the ball. I have references like Ancelotti or Klopp in terms of character, group management, the way they normalize things that happen in the team. I don’t have a specific one, I try to get the best. I also tried to be myself at the level of a person within the coach. I have to make decisions, but I also like them to see that human side that we have, that we are one more with our concerns, our problems, that we also suffer…
Today’s coach has to lead not only a team of players, but a work team with more and more professionals working in different areas!
And that’s how it happened. It’s not just about the 25 players in the squad, but everyone around you, which is another team where everyone has responsibilities and you have to try to make everyone feel important and you can’t forget that.
Your reference as a player?
I love center midfield. I have worked with Oliver Torres, Rodri… I have seen them when they were little with the hope of playing in the professional world and they are there now.
Central midfielders, Guardiola, Ancelotti or Xabi Alonso himself spring to mind, are often good coaches when they hang up their boots.
It’s a position that requires you to see the football in 360 degrees. You are quite balanced, you think about everything, have a more integrative perspective. I like combined football. We try not to lose the essence of the team.
