He Al-Ittihad of the Saudi league announced this Thursday the dismissal of the Argentine coach Marcelo Gallardo (48), who arrived in November 2023. The Jeddah club cited a controversial decision as the reason for the dismissal: the departure of the former Real Madrid striker for the first leg of the round of 16 of the Asian Champions League against Navbahor Namangan of Uzbekistan.
Gallardo argued that the decision to release Benzema was “purely technical”, although relations between the two had been strained for some time. “He is currently training alone, after joining the team a few days ago. When he is physically and technically prepared he will join the group, most likely next week,” said Gallardo, who already punished the French forward in January when he did not with the group on an internship in Dubai for his final return for the continuation.
“Today the Ittiah club has terminated the contract of its coach Marcelo Gallardo,” announces a short text on Al-Ittihad’s X account. “The club wishes him the best for his future goals.”
