The athlete of South Africa Jacques Freitagthe world champion in the high jump at the 2003 World Athletics Championships in Paris, was found dead with bullet wounds near a cemetery in the city of Pretoria.
The 42-year-old former athlete last seen on June 17 when she left her mother’s house with a man around 1 a.m., according to reports Athletics Weekly.
South African media maintain that the case is being investigated by the police as a murderbut so far no suspect has been arrested.
Born in Warrenton (South Africa) in 1982, Freitag grew up in Gauteng and was exposed to athletics from his childhood, as his mother was a national high jump champion.
In 1999, at the age of 17, he dedicated himself U18 world high jump champion and fourth at the Johannesburg African Games.
A year later he became the world under-20 champion in Santiago de Chile and in 2003 he achieved his greatest success by winning the gold medal in Paris Athletics World Cup with a jump of 2.35 meters. He still holds the South African high jump record today with a mark of 2.38 meters.
