Today Argentina fans once again took over the iconic Times Square, in the commercial center of New York, to cheer on their team who tomorrow will face the Canada at Metlife Stadium, in nearby New Jersey, in the semifinal match of America Cup.
Argentines of all ages – some 2-year-old children hanging on their parents’ shoulders – wearing Albiceleste shirts showed up at one end of the square, as they did on the 24th, opposing the this occasion in the leaden heat that now breathes in New York.
Many carried small flags of their country, and also displayed a giant one while chanting slogans such as “He who does not jump is an Englishman” or “And you see / we are locals again” or “I follow you even where Argentina. / Whenever I love you more”.
They also sang more elaborate songs in memory of Diego Armando Maradona, who was also the star of a large mural displayed at the ground where he was seen next to his natural successor, Lionel Messi.
Among the attendees were many Argentines living in New York, but also other compatriots who traveled for the Copa América from all corners of the southern country, and were interviewed by local journalists from Rosario, Tucumán or Buenos Aires.
Taking advantage of the euphoria, a Venezuelan who had tickets for tomorrow’s semifinal resold them today with a sign: he confessed that he paid 650 dollars for two tickets but is now selling them for “500 lang” now that his country has been disqualified. .
It is assumed that Argentina fans will occupy the Metlife stadium in the near future to a greater extent than Canadian fans, perhaps surprised that their country, with so little football tradition, has made it this far .
