Giannis Antetokounmpo will experience for the first time in Paris what it feels like to be part of the Olympic Games. And it will do so by becoming one of the most important symbols of the Hellenic nation.
This Tuesday, the Hellenic Olympic Committee announced that the Milwaukee Bucks player will lead, along with the specialist walker athlete Antigoni Drisbiotinational flag at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games.
Thanks to Greece’s victory over Croatia last weekend in the Pre-Olympic final, the Greek basketball team will return to play at the Games after a sixteen-year absence, meaning its last presence will be in Beijing 2008. After getting the ticket to Paris and being asked about the possibility of being the flag bearer, Antetokounmpo said it would be “an honor” to carry the flag at the opening ceremony.
“It would be an honor. If it’s me [el abanderado], brilliant. Otherwise, nothing will happen. I am happy to have a good technical staff and a good team. I’m at the Games, I just want to be there, compete and try to do something important. Like coach said, I’m going to enjoy every moment,” Giannis said after the game.
