Conmebol statement on the Uruguay-Colombia incidents

The South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) “strongly condemned” in a statement “acts of violence in football”, although it avoided directly identifying the match between Uruguay players and Colombia fans after of the semifinal of America Cup between both options. “There is no place for intolerance and violence on and off the field,” Conmebol said in a statement.

Darwin Núñez, Ronald Araujo and José María Giménez, among other Uruguayan players, climbed into the stands to fight the Colombian fans after losing 0-1 in the semifinal played this Wednesday at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte (North Carolina).

Giménez later assured in televised statements that the families of the light blue players in the stands were “in danger” due to the actions of some Colombian fans. “Conmebol strongly condemns any act of violence affecting football,” he said in the statement. “We invite everyone in the remaining days to pour all their passion into cheering on their teams and having an unforgettable party,” added Conmebol.

Before the match with the fans and after the match, a fierce fight also broke out between the players of the two teams in the middle of the field.
