Verstappen’s surprise revelation of his 2021 title: “I’ve never said this before”

The three-time F1 world champion Max Verstappenof red bullsaid Thursday that he ran with blurred vision in 2021 after a collision with British Grand Prix with his rival for the title Lewis Hamilton, although he says the problem is long gone. That year, the Dutch driver won the first of his three consecutive titles (2021, 2022, 2023).

The Dutch driver was quoted last week in the team’s Red Bulletin as saying he had vision problems in several races while battling Mercedes’ Hamilton for the title.

The news came as a surprise and also raised some security concerns.

“I’ve never said this before, but it was so bad for a few laps that I seriously thought about stopping the car,” he said, referring to United States Grand Prix of that time. The striking quote was later retracted.

On Thursday, on the occasion of Hungarian Grand Prixtold reporters that it was only in 2021. “After that it disappeared. I mean, that already happened,” said the pilot.

Asked if this happened directly after the crash Silverstonewhen Verstappen was taken to hospital to be assessed after crashing into a wall at full speed, he responded: “It never happened before.”

“We are racing drivers. You face all kinds of things. Always here and there there are little injuries or whatever. Things like that happen,” he said. “He was cured, luckily. I don’t want to go into details, no one needs to know.”
