The 19-year-old, who won a bronze medal at the 2022 World Cup, was sent home to Japan from his training camp in Monaco after admitting to breaching the team’s rules of conduct.

“Upon confirmation of this and after talking to all parties, that was agreed upon [Miyata] will leave the concentration,” announced the general secretary of the Japan Gymnastics Association, Kenji Nishimura.

Nishimura explained that the federation was informed that Miyata was seen smoking in a private place in Tokyo in late June or early July. In addition, it was also reported that he was drinking alcohol in a room at the national training center in Japan. It should be noted that, in Japan, the legal age for drinking and smoking is 20 years and older.

The young Japanese team captain was absent from practice on Wednesday, July 17. At the time, the Japan Gymnastics Association said Miyata’s absence was due to “several reasons.”
