The American Marcos Giron won the first tournament of his career on Sunday defeating compatriot Alex Michelsen in the final on the Newport grass court after saving a match point.
The 46th player in the world, seeded no. won in three sets 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 7-5 in 2 hours and 37 minutes to the 61st player in the world to wrest the title from Frenchman Adrian Mannarino.
Giron broke early, but lost the first set in a tie-break, before recovering, hitting 13 aces in the process, including one to save match point in the third set and another to claim the trophy.
Giron, who turns 31 on Wednesday, climbed to 38th place in the ATP rankings, the highest of his career. He is playing in his third final on the ATP circuit, after losing in San Diego in 2022 and in Dallas this year.
Michelsen, 19, is playing in his second final after losing last year to Mannarino on this same court in Newport. He is the youngest player since Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz in Umag in 2021 and 2022 to reach two consecutive finals in the same ATP tournament.
