The president of France, Emmanuel Macron assured this Monday that everything is ready for the celebration of the Olympic Games and for the opening ceremony, which for the first time will be held outside a stadium, next to the River Seine.
“we are ready”, said the head of state during a visit to the Olympic Village, located in the department of Saint-Denis, in the northern suburbs of Paris.
Macron, accompanied, among others, by the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin; that of Sports, Amélie Oudéa-Castéra; and the president of the Paris 2024 organizing committee, Tony Estanguet, toured some of the Villa’s facilities, such as the police station built inside.
He also spoke briefly with security personnel and facility workers, before meeting the French athletes for lunch.
Macron thanked the workers and agents for their sacrifice to ensure the “successful” celebration of the Games.
France will deploy its internal security forces “like never before,” Macron recalled, not only “during the opening ceremony but throughout the Olympic period.”
And that is, he stressed, thanks to “250,000 men and women who sacrifice their family time” and that they would let the French feel “collective pride.”
“Thank you from the bottom of my heart, on behalf of all the men and women of France, for allowing us to host the world, the Olympics and have great Games,” he also said during the visit.
Enhanced security for the Israeli delegation
Guaranteeing security is one of the priority concerns of these Games, especially given the unprecedented nature of the opening ceremony, which will be witnessed by 326,000, including two hundred heads of State and Government.
In France, the anti-terrorist surveillance system remains on the highest alert level since the October attacks by Hamas against Israel and the subsequent crackdown by the State of Israel against the Gaza Strip.
Last night, in an interview with the France 2 channel, the French Interior Minister explained that the Israeli Olympic delegation will be under reinforced security by the French police.
“They are particularly the target of (possible) attack (…) They are welcomewe are proud that they are there and that they can play sports,” specified Darmanin.
During the opening ceremony, 90 boats will be paraded carrying the 206 Olympic delegation along 6 kilometers of the Seine River and, although the details of the event are kept secret, musical numbers and a great light and show of Fireworks are expected. A hot air balloon was also spotted in the Tuileries gardens, which have been closed for more than a week.
As many as 45,000 agents will be deployed across the capital that daywhile on the remaining days the operation will consist of 30,000 to 35,000 agents daily, depending on the different events that take place each day.
The Olympic Village, for its part, has already begun to accommodate some of the 14,000 athletes and companions who will be staying there during the Games.
