The Romanian long jumper Florentina Iusco will not compete in the Paris Olympic Games after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Thursday partially upheld an appeal from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) after testing positive for a banned substance.
Iusco tested positive for furosemide, a diuretic on WADA’s list of prohibited substancesin an out-of-competition anti-doping test conducted in April last year.
The Romanian National Anti-Doping Organization punished him with a reprimand and no period of ineligibility, on the grounds that he was not guilty or negligent.
However, after WADA appealed to the CAS, the arbitrator of the highest sports court determined that he did not act with the diligence required to “not have been grossly culpable or negligent”, imposing a two-year penalty from February 1 of this year.
