Rain alarm in F1: Alonso and Sainz, with more surprise options in qualifying

Date:

Rain is expected in the always uncertain and strange summer of Spa-Francorchamps for the second day of training F1 Belgian GP 2024. And the water has not missed its appointment since the third Free Practice session this Saturday, in which the F1 drivers rode little, very little, and thus they have to go directly to the classification this Saturday afternoon (4:00 pm) , in the that once again rain is expected to be the protagonist.

The rain has arrived to reverse the battle against the clock. Dry, both McLaren, Verstappen (with a 10-place grid penalty for engine changes) and perhaps the Mercedes (if they develop) is the favorites. But in the wet, the order of the grid this Sunday could be completely different.

Drivers have to deal with the classification after riding very little. And in that context, Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz will try to fish in turbulent rivers.

The rain provides an opportunity for surprises in qualifying to make up the starting grid for this Sunday. In the drought, Sainz’s options at Ferrari seem to be few and far between at the top and Alonso will have to aim for Q3. In the rain, nothing can be denied and both, in delicate conditions, can grow and make differences in their hands when the mechanics are less important. They will test it in a classification that seems exciting, where achieving a good time in the best track conditions, when it rains a little or when the asphalt is the driest, can be important. Or do it before an accident occurs that could stop the session or eliminate a thrown lap.

Maximum emotion after riding very little

The drivers made very few laps in the first 10 minutes on the intermediate tire. But the rain quickly increased. And under a heavy downpour, the possibility of an accident on intermediate tires increased. And it came. Lance Stroll crashed into protection on the exit of the legendary Eau Rouge corner and the session was stopped by a red flag.

And after Stroll’s car left, a second red flag was shown due to heavy rain and puddles forming on the asphalt. It was only possible to ride in the last 2 last minutes, in heavy rain tire conditions. But not everyone goes to the asphalt to try it.

Yes, Carlos Sainz did, and on a very fine track, with cold tires, he ended up on the gravel, although there were no consequences for him.

In this way, the time table was not representative. Max Verstappen took the lead, with Piastri in 2nd at 1’433 and Gasly in 3rd position at 1’610. Norris was 4th by 1.8, with Alonso 13th by 6 seconds and Sainz 10th, untimed.
