The Serbian Novak Djokovicwho is still competing in the Paris Olympic Games, will not participate in the Montreal Masters 1,000 (from August 6 to 12), the tournament in Canada was just announced.
“Although we are disappointed that Novak will not be able to participate in this year’s tournament, we understand his decision and wish him the best at the Olympic Games and for the rest of the season,” said tournament director Valérie Tétreault .
Nole has won the tournament four times in Canada, but hasn’t played there since 2018.
His withdrawal allowed Russian Roman Safiullin, 26 years old and 66th in the world, to enter the main draw.
The world number 2 qualified this Monday for the round of 16 of the Olympic Games after defeating Rafa Nadal, 6-1, 6-4.
With this being the first tournament to be held after the Olympic Games and with several players injured, Djokovic’s loss is expected to be the first in a series of casualties.
