Bronze medalist in Tokyo, American Gaby Thomas became the new Olympic 200-meter champion in a discreet final, run against headwinds and in which none of the finalists produced their best mark of the year. Only Thomas went under 22 seconds (21.83), and the 100m champion in Paris, Julien Alfred, recovered in the final meters to finish second (22.08), completing a stellar sprint at these Games, with a gold and a silver, the first podiums in history for the small island of Saint Lucia. Brittany Brown gave the United States the bronze (22.20). Jamaica, the great dominator of the last Olympic cycle, failed to get any representative in the final.
In the Long Course, the Greek Miltiadis Tentoglou, a former parkour practitioner, revalidated the Olympic gold thanks to an excellent jump of 8.48 meters, to beat the Jamaican Wayne Pinnock (8.36). Tentoglou is, after Carl Lewis, the only athlete to repeat the long title at the Games.
Canadian Camryn Rogers won the women’s hammer final with 76.97 meters, leaving American Annette Echikunwoke (75.48) without a title. Polish Anita Wlodarczyk, three-time Olympic champion, missed the podium by four centimeters: she was fourth, 4 centimeters behind the bronze taken by Chinese Jie Zhao (74.27).
