The Spanish delegation that will participate between August 28 and September 8 in the Paris Paralympic Games will mark a historic record for the female quota, since 36% of the athletes are women, a percentage in which swimming, swimming, wheelchair basketball and athletics.
The Spanish Paralympic Team consists of 259 people, of which 150 are athletes (139 with disabilities and 11 supported athletes, such as athletics and triathlon guides, and rowing coxswain) and 109 other members, including coaches, doctors, physiotherapists, mechanics and organizational and office staff.
Spanish athletes will compete in 16 of the 22 sports of the Paralympic program: athletics, wheelchair basketball, boccia, cycling, wheelchair fencing, weightlifting, judo, swimming, canoeing, rowing, taekwondo, table tennis, table tennis, shooting, archery and triathlon.
A total of 54 athletes from Spain were women, representing 36% of the total, something never before achieved in the history of the Paralympic Games. Without counting support athletes, that number rises to 38%.
HATCHING IN BARCELONA’92
Paralympic sport in Spain emerged from the Barcelona ’92 Games. As the host country, the national team managed to qualify 227 athletes with disabilities, of which 161 men (71%) and 66 women (29%).
This female percentage has not been surpassed in any subsequent Paralympic edition (26% in Atlanta’96, 25% in Sydney, 22% in Athens 2004, 24% in Beijing 2008, 22% in London 2012 and 24% in Rio 2016 ) to Tokyo. 2020, where women represent 31% of Spanish athletes.
Paris 2024This female quota of athletes will increase to 36%, including athletes with disabilities and supporting athletes. However, women will be the majority in wheelchair fencing and weightlifting (100%), and boccia (67%), and will exceed the average in wheelchair basketball, judo, rowing and taekwondo (50%); swimming and triathlon (38%), and athletics (37%).
In absolute terms, the Paris 2024 Paralympic edition will be the second with the most female athletes in Spain, with 54, surpassed only by Barcelona’92.
