Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates), first leader of the Vuelta 24, setting the fastest time in history at 57.197 km/h, said “something crazy had to happen for me to win,” but his victory was the result of an impressive display throughout 12 km of route.
“I knew that if something crazy happened, I could win… and I thought something crazy happened!” I am hopeful, but it is hard to believe. In other words, I had really nice legs. “I feel really good in training, especially during the Olympics,” said the 26-year-old Phoenix cyclist.
McNulty, winner 5 times this season, explained that with such a short effort there was almost no time to adjust, so the effort was built “in blocks” from start to finish.
“I just went as hard as I could. I showed that I can finish on a good day. It’s nice to lead and I’m going to enjoy it, but it’s no secret that we have two very strong leaders in Joao Almeida and Adam Yates, so I will do everything to help them,” he concluded.
