Kenyan Faith Kipyegon, who initially finished second in Monday’s 5,000 meters final at the Paris Games and was later disqualified, re-qualified and regained the silver medal she lost after a race won by her compatriot Beatrice Chebet.
Once the Kenyan was disqualified, Dutch Sifan Hassan moved up to silver and Italian Nadia Batocletti to bronze. The judges estimated that Kipyegon left the court several times, inside the inner ring, and then, in order to re-enter, had some altercation with the Ethiopian Gudaf Tsegay.
Kenya’s claim sought to explain that Kipyegon was ‘sent’ on the trail and had no alternative but to brush up against Tsegay. After nearly two hours of deliberation, it was announced that the Kenyan had regained second place, leaving Hassan third and Italian Batocletti without a medal, fourth.
