The English Women’s League will have women leadership

Date:

A new era begins in English women’s football, considered one of the best in the world. The two main leagues in English women’s football have officially split from the Football Association to form the independent Women’s Professional Leagues Ltd (WPLL).

It is a new entity that will have female leadership. WPLL covers all aspects of women’s professional football in England.

Last year, the 24 teams that make up the two main tiers of professional women’s football in England – the Women’s Super League and the Women’s Championship – voted unanimously to create a new independent organization dedicated exclusively to development and marketing of women’s football. The two leagues (inaugurated in 2011 and 2014 respectively) were previously under the direction of the English Football Association (FA).

An all-female executive leadership team will run English women’s football’s top two leagues, after the Football Association handed over ownership of the Women’s Super League (WSL) and Women’s Championship to a new independent company on Thursday.

Each of the 24 clubs will act as a shareholder in the new company, which WPLL says is “focused on driving growth and maximizing potential, putting players and fans at the center.” Despite the record attendance period, they insist they will not prioritize short-term profits, stating that “it is important to invest in infrastructure and resources over revenue to start this transformation journey and ensure long-term sustainability and growth.”

The executive leadership team will consist of four members, who will report to the executive director, Nikki Doucet. So, they will be the director of operations, Holly Murdochinterim marketing director, Ruth Hooper, director of football, Mirelle Van Rijbroekand the director of revenue, Zarah Al-Kudcywhose move from Chelsea was announced by the Guardian in June.
