He former vice president of the Chinese Football Association was sentenced to 11 years in prison and a fine of 1 million yuan ($139,579.03) for accepting bribes, state news agency Xinhua reported on Monday, citing the court’s decision. Li Yuyi’s conviction follows investigations into more than a dozen senior football officials since the end of 2022.
The sport has long struggled with corruption, which fans have blamed for the national team’s continued underperformance. In 2012, two former heads of the same football association were each sentenced to 10 and a half years in prison for thefts.
In March, a former head of China’s football association was sentenced to life in prison for accepting more than $10 million in bribes, in one of the largest anti-corruption investigations in sports in recent years.
