Villarreal coach Marcelino García Toral said the draw against Atlético de Madrid (2-2) was a “fair” result, although he pointed out that any team could win because of small details.
The Asturian coach, who witnessed the match from a box while he was suspended, acknowledged that he always wanted to win, but insisted that the point was good “because we played against a good rival and we were close win.”
“There was a lot of equality in everything. It’s a shame not to go into the break with an advantage,” the coach said, admitting that his team could have “done better” defensively.
“I am grateful and proud of the game we played against a good team. The level we gave today strengthens us,” commented the Asturian, who considered it “logical” that there were some imbalances due to the presence of some new players.
Regarding the options to fight for Europe, Marcelino asked for “game by game” and recalled that until the market closes, the team’s options will not be known with guarantees.
“There are four games left in the competition and we and all the teams are in a complicated situation. There are 12 points and you have to get as many as possible. Once the squad is closed we will see if we can make a good team, more solid and competitive than last season,” he argued.
The coach regrets having four games in August, because he does not consider it “logical” because there are enough dates in the calendar, but indicated that the team must adapt to the situation.
The coach does not want to check the transfer rumors to focus on the players who are in the squad that must face three more games before the market closes.
