Van Aert: “Seeing the defending champion shooting for you is a source of pride”

Date:

Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike), winner of seventh stage of the Vuelta, He appreciates the work of his teammate Sepp Kuss to prepare for the sprint finish, which reflects the team’s philosophy and fills the Belgian with pride, as the American is the defending champion in this edition of the Spanish round.

“I expect a bigger group to come to the finish line. I knew the last climb was tough, but I never thought the race would explode like this. At the top, I found myself alone with Sepp Kuss in the group. It’s really hard to manage, but Sepp has done an incredible job” Van Aert commented at the finish line.

The cyclist from Herentals completed the crucial task of Kuss, when he canceled the last escape of Marc Soler and then prepared the sprint for the triple cyclocross world champion.

“I don’t know if people realize if you’re under 60 kilos and what it means to give this kind of relay on the flat. He had goosebumps all over his tires, and he just wanted to get it over with. “This is an important achievement,” he said.

Despite the strategy deployed by the UAE and Soler’s attack, Van Aert also tried to surprise, but the front group prevented him from flying.

“I thought they would send me out if I was surprised, but I saw that the UAE was catching up behind, and I didn’t want to take the risk of being left behind and still getting caught. In the end, I was able to rely on Sepp. In our team, it is not only about performance, but also about working as a team, make difficult plans, and an important part of this is that everyone is willing to sacrifice for others.

“Seeing the defending champion of this race pulling for you is a great example of our team’s philosophy. “I’m very proud of it,” he concluded.
