The mayor of Rotterdam, Ahmed Aboutaleb, today announced the decision to suspend the Feyenoord-Ajax Amsterdam ‘Klassieker’ of the Eredivisie, scheduled for Sunday at the De Kuip stadium in Rotterdam, due to the police strike.
“The safety of the players, but also of the public, cannot be adequately guaranteed without the intervention of the police,” said Aboutaleb, without revealing when the match corresponding to the fourth day of the Dutch championship will be on will finally be played.
The police, contrary to the Government
The decision, taken in agreement with the Rotterdam police, was communicated to interested parties on Tuesday afternoon. The police announced on Monday that they will not be attending the ‘Klassieker’ due to strike calls that started a few months ago in relation to early retirement.
The ‘Klassiker’ was played for several years without visiting fans for security reasons.
The Dutch Football Association (KNVB) regrets the police strike and the subsequent postponement of the match while expressing the hope that the police and the Dutch government will quickly come to an agreement on this early retirement issue.
