One of the sports that started this Thursday at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games is table tennis, where the entire Spanish team, only male representatives, is making its debut. It comes in the doubles category, with the desire to fight for medals with one of the couples. However, the five Spanish couples participating in the event have since been eliminated.
Iker Sastre and Miguel Ángel Toledo are just one point away from advancing to the semifinals of the MW4 category, which will hopefully guarantee them at least a bronze medal. In a debut they made directly to the quarterfinals as third seeds, they lost to Slovaks Peter Lovas and Jan Riapos, fifth seeds.
Sastre and Toledo controlled the match for the most part, but they lost 2-3 with partial scores of 11-3, 10-12, 7-11, 14-12 and 11-8. The Spaniards had two match points in the fourth set, but saw Lovas and Riapos come back and seal the fifth. Here, the Slovaks won the game and left them without a podium option.
This is not the only defeat of the day. The day was opened by Roberto Eder Rodríguez and Francisco Javier López in the round of 16 of the MW8 category. In it they went down on their debut against Thai Chaiwut/Glinbacheun by an aggregate of 0-3 which left them with no choice to advance to the top8.
The MS18 category took over, but there was also no progress, despite the fact that on this occasion there were two Spanish couples who participated since the round of 16. Jorge Cardona and Ander Cepas lost 0-3 matches to Brazilians Manara/Massad and bid farewell to the tournament. The same happened to José Manuel Ruiz and Alejandro Díaz, who lost their debut against Chinese Lian/Zhao 1-3.
The day also left the defeat of one of the most powerful Spanish duo. Flag bearer Álvaro Valera and Jordi Morales lost in the round of 16 of MS14 against Chileans Matías Pino and Ignacio Torres by 0-3. In this way, the Spanish team is left with individual tables.
