The Belarusian Aryna Sabalenkanumber two in the WTA world rankings, won by 6-2 and 6-4 this Sunday to the Belgian Elise Mertens (no. 35) and flew to the quarterfinals of the US Open.
Sabalenka connected 41 winning shots and annulled the eight breaking points awarded to Mertensfour in the first set and four in the second, to advance in one hour and 36 minutes.
The Belarusian, who had to overcome a set deficit in the previous round to beat Ekaterina Alexandrova, will face off in quarters to the china Qinwen Zheng (nº 7), imposed this morning against the Croatian Donna Vekic (no. 24) by 7-6, 4-6 and 6-2.
Sabelenka shared the side of the draw with Spaniard Paula Badosa (n.29), who won with authority against Chinese Yafan Wang (n.80) to reach the quarterfinals.
Badosa and Sabalenkawith strong bonds of friendship, can face each other in a hypothetical semi-final.
