Rodrigo Bentancur (27) may be away from the playing fields for several weeks. This time, it wasn’t because of a physical setback, but because of an unfortunate racist comment directed at his teammate, South Korean Son Heung-min.
The FA made an official statement saying: ”Rodrigo Bentancur has been charged with an alleged breach of FA Rule E3 for misconduct in relation to a media interview It is alleged that the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder breached FA rule E3.1 by acting inappropriately. and/or using abusive and/or insulting words and/or spoiling the game. “It is further alleged that it constitutes an ‘aggravated offence’ as defined in FA Rule E3.2 because it includes a reference, either express or implied, to nationality and/or racial and/or ethnic origin.”
The Uruguayan has until September 19 to respond to the accusation. Meanwhile, ‘Football London’ says the punishment will be between six and twelve games if he is found guilty. According to the rules mentioned by the FA the minimum is six and the maximum is twelve.
What comment are you accused of making?
A reporter asked, “Can you get me the Korean’s T-shirt?” to which Bentancur replied, “Sonny?” The journalist went on to say: “Or any other champion,” before the midfielder replied: “Or any of Sonny’s cousins, they’re all the same.”
He later apologized to his Spurs team-mate Son and released a statement on social media, saying it was a “very bad” joke. Son quickly accepted his apology and insisted that his teammate just made a mistake.
