The 2024 season of Diamond League It culminated last weekend with the grand final celebration at the Van Damme Memorial in Brussels.
In six months the League offered fifteen meetings in thirteen different countries which left seven world records and a large number of memorable moments that we highlight in this article.

Duplantis opened the season with a world record
Xiamen
The season started with a bang in April in Xiamen, China, where Armand Duplantis broke the pole vault world record for the first time this year. ‘Mondo’ reached 6.24 meters and exceeded his previous record by one centimeter, which dates from 2023. A few months later, in Silesia, the Swede will improve his record to leave it at 6.26 meters.

Beatrice Chebet, first woman to exceed 29 minutes in 10,000m

The legendary Hayward Field stadium in Oregon (United States) experienced a historic day in May with Beatrice Chebet’s world record. The 24-year-old Kenyan won the 10,000m race in a time of 28 minutes 54.14 seconds and became the first woman in history to break 29 minutes over the distance.

Kerr vs Ingebrigtsen, a heated rivalry

The Eugene Diamond League also featured an epic duel between two of the best middle distance runners in the world: Josh Kerr versus Jakob Ingebrigtsen. The Scot, 1,500m world champion, beat the Norwegian in the mile test in a blistering time of 3 minutes 45.34 which marked a new British record for the distance.

Faith Kipyegon, the absolute queen of the 1,500m

One of the highlights of the season came in July at the Paris Meeting, where Faith Kipyegon broke the 1,500m world record with an impressive 3 minutes 49.04 seconds. The Kenyan middle-distance runner won the race with ease and shaved several hundred off the record he set last year in the city of Florence.

Mahuchikh broke one of the longest running records in athletics

Jumper Yaroslava Mahuchikh starred in one of the most epic moments of the year, also in Paris, when she broke the world height record with a jump of 2.10 meters. The 22-year-old Ukrainian surpassed the record of Bulgarian athlete Stefka Kostadinova, who is 37 years old, by one centimeter.

Mohamed Attaoui broke the Spanish 800m record for history
Monaco
Ahead of the start of the Paris Olympic Games, the Monaco Diamond League set off with an epic 800m race where Mohamed Attaoui finished second and broke the Spanish record at the distance with a time of 1 minute 42.04 seconds, beating big names like Gabriel Tual, Marco Arop or Catalin Tecuceanu.

Jessica Hull took the 2,000m record
Monaco
Australian Jessica Hull was one of the great protagonists of the Monaco meeting by breaking the 2,000m world record. The 27-year-old athlete, who a few weeks later will win a silver medal in the 1,500m at the Paris Olympics, ran the distance in 5 minutes 19.70 seconds and shaved two seconds off the mark set of Burundian Niyonsaba in 2021.

Emmanuel Wanyonyi reaffirmed his dominance in the 800m

After the Paris Olympics, the Diamond League continued at the Lausanne meeting, where new Olympic 800 meters champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi set the second best time in history for the distance with a mark of 1 minute 41, 11 seconds. The Kenyan is a few tenths away from the world record still held by his countryman David Rudisha (1:40.91).

Ingebrigtsen broke the 3,000m world record

The Olympic 5,000m champion at the Paris Games, Jakob Ingebrigtsen, again showed all his talents at the Silesian Diamond League, where he broke the 3,000m world record with a mark of 7 minutes and 17.55 seconds, about 3 seconds over mark established by Kenyan Daniel Koen in 1996.
