Real Sociedad’s European debut celebrates its 50th anniversary today. On September 18, 1974 in the UEFA Cup, Real faced Czechoslovak side Baník Ostrava. This match marked a milestone in the club’s history, as it was the first time they participated in an international competition.
The match was played at the Atotxa stadium and Real failed to win on their debut in European competition. The Czechoslovaks, thanks to a goal from Miroslav Micka In ’62, they didn’t let Real fans enjoy the dream premiere. The eleven in which Real appeared were as follows: Urruti; Gorriti, Martínez, Murillo, Kortabarria; Gaztelu, Alvarez; Ansola, Araquistain, Boronat and Urreisti. The result was not overwhelming, but the team could not bring it back to Ostrava and was eliminated in the first round 5-0 on aggregate.
To remember this date, the club wanted to pay tribute to that team with a video, which they uploaded to the club’s networks, with Carmelo Amas, Diego Alvarez and Santi Idigorasmembers of the historic squad. After 50 years, the journey is long, but there is still a long journey next Wednesday against Nice, another new chapter will begin in the club’s history in European competitions.
