LIV players qualify for the Ryder Cup and PGA

Date:

LIV golfers are considered eligible to compete with PGA Championship (Grand Slam played in May) and for teams of Ryder Cup of the US in the future, this Thursday announced the PGA of America.

With its board of directors, the PGA made the decision as a way to ensure that the second major of the year can have the strongest possible field, while future US Ryder Cup teams will continue to have access to the best which are American players.

Brooks Koepka of LIV Golf He was part of the American team at last year’s Ryder Cup thanks to a grace period that allowed him to remain a member of the PGA of America until 2024, but it is unclear how the body will continue to govern the division in professional golf. The same grace period also applied to LIV Golf players competing in the PGA Championship.

The decision paves the way for LIV Golf players such as current US Open champion Bryson DeChambeauwhich is third on the United States points list for the 2025 Ryder Cup despite not qualifying for PGA Tour events, where most points can be earned.

The European Ryder Cup team has a way for LIV Golf players to participate in the biennial showdown, with the main criteria being that they must play at least four DP World Tour events each year. In addition, players will also have to pay fines for competing in tournaments on the Saudi-funded circuit that conflict with DP World Tour events without seeking permission from the European-based circuit.

Jon Rahm, which was key for Europe in the 2023 Ryder Cup before joining LIV Golf two months later, intends to play the required European events (Spanish Open, Alfred Dunhill Championship and Estrella Damm Andalucía Masters), and appealed the fines imposed by DP World Tour to him.

The 2025 Ryder Cup between the United States and Europe will be held next September at Bethpage Black in New York.
