Carlos Alcarazwinner of four Grand Slams, said in Berlin that a busy tennis schedule makes it difficult for players to stay motivated throughout the year and increases the risk of injuries.
The world number three, who this year won Roland Garros and Wimbledon, in addition to a silver medal at the Paris Olympic Games, said he fears the situation will worsen in the future with the inclusion of more mandatory tournaments on the calendar.
“Perhaps, in the next years, there will be more mandatory tournaments. “They’ll probably kill us anyway,” Alcaraz said after defeating Ben Shelton in the Laver Cup.
“Right now there are… many (players) injured because of the calendar. Probably at some point many good players will miss many tournaments because of that,” added the 21-year-old from Murcia.
The El Palmer tennis player played 50 professional singles matches this year before Laver, winning 41 of them. It’s hard. Sometimes I don’t feel motivated. The schedule is very tight. Lots of tournaments…not as many days off as I’d like. I have felt many times, that I don’t want to go to that tournament. I want to stay at home with my family and friends,” Alcaraz said.
