The new ‘pearl’ of Chinese tennis defeated Musetti and won his first ATP title

Date:

Juncheng ‘Jerry’ Shanga 19-year-old new promise of Asian tennis, inaugurated this Tuesday his record of ATP tournament titles in Chengdu (China) with a huge victory over the top seed in the table, the Italian Lorenzo Musetti, in straight sets ( 7 -6 and 6-1).

With this victory, Shang became the second Chinese tennis player to win an ATP tournament, after Wu Yinbing, who won the Dallas tournament in 2023. Musetti, world number 19, and Shang, 55 in the ATP ranking, are they have never met head to head on a court and the Italian was surprised in the first set by the solidity of his rival, reaching 5-5 without putting his serve in jeopardy and then signing a very comfortable break. The Italian’s reaction led the set to a tiebreaker, with the local player taking a decisive 5-2 advantage.

This was nothing more than a preview of what happened in the second round, which Shang unleashed and added points after points. They led 3-0 and then 5-1 and, although they gave up two break points, they saved both and went on to their first title.

Shang is the second Chinese player to play in an ATP circuit final, after Wu Yinbing. The third is, almost simultaneously, Zhang Zhizhen, who plays for Hangzhou this Tuesday.

Musetti is aiming for his first title this season. However, the Italian has lost in the three finals he has played in Queen’s, Umag and now Chengdu.
